Accredited Online K-12 Programs

When most people think of online education, college or higher education is likely what comes to mind. But as the online educational platform grows in popularity, the online classroom is no longer just for college students. Students, parents, and administrators can see the benefits that online education provides to all types of learners, and online schools for students from kindergarten through high school seniors are becoming more common.

While still primarily aimed at older students, such as high school students, online elementary and middle schools provide courses taught by certified teachers to younger students, which can be easily supplemented by parents or other supervisors through hands-on activities. This format might be particularly attractive to parents of sick, disabled, or special needs children, as well as for use in conjunction with home-school programs.

Students will receive online the same education they would receive in a traditional classroom: courses in math, science, social studies, reading and language arts, and elective courses such as music, art, and theater. The benefits of online pre-college education are the same for young learners as they are for older students. With online learning, students have the ability to learn at their own pace, taking more time on the coursework they find more difficult, and being able to really focus on their strengths and areas for improvement. And in the online classroom, they won’t face distractions from other students.

Pre-college virtual education can come from a variety of providers, from school districts themselves to private companies. Especially at the high school level, many school districts have begun offering at least some distance learning courses so that students can graduate with their peers or make up for lost credits. Online coursework can be especially appealing to students who even in high school have family or occupational obligations that make a traditional high school nearly impossible to attend. For students with some high school credits but an incomplete diploma, online courses to prepare for the GED high school equivalency exam could be the difference between earning a diploma and not graduating at all. Some pre-college online programs will charge tuition, while others will provide the education for free just as a public school would.
