Accredited Online Education Programs
Earning an online degree in education can be a great way to be involved in teaching and educating America’s students, from preschoolers to high school students, and perhaps college students as well. A degree in education could put you in the classroom, in a school office as a counselor or principal, in a district office as you oversee administrators and curriculum, or in a variety of other education and teaching-based jobs.
Depending on which subject matter and which grade you’d like to teach, your curriculum will vary as you get more advanced. You can expect coursework in classroom management, child development, and lesson planning. More specialized courses may include elementary education, special education, and teaching English as a second language. You will likely also be required to participate in student and classroom observation, and record a certain number of classroom hours in order to comply with degree and possibly state requirements. While bachelor’s degrees will take around four years to earn depending on the program, higher level degrees may take two to six years to complete in addition to a bachelor’s degree.
Though regulated overall by the U.S. Department of Education, teaching requirements and certifications will vary by state. Many states will require you to not only earn a degree in education, but will also require a separate certification in specific subject areas, such as elementary education or high school social studies, that can be achieved after taking a state test. Some states will also require you to renew your certification every few years, and others will require you to pursue an advanced education degree, such as a master’s or doctorate, before you can teach at all. If you already have a degree in another field, you can also consider pursuing an alternative teaching certification, which will require fewer courses, but will still prepare you for state certification exams.
Because you will be influencing countless students as an educator, it is key that you find an online education college that is accredited. A school’s accreditation will tell you if its program has been evaluated for quality and if its financial standing is secure.
